Finding Module Positions - Joomla 1.6

In this quick article I will show you how to find the modules positions of a Joomla 1.6 template if the developer does not provide any module map. We always create a picture with module positions for our templates, but in case you don't find the picture here is how to preview the module positions on your own website:

Joomla 1.6 Module Positions
First of all you have to activate in the Joomla 1.6 backend this feature.
1. Go to Extensions > Template Manager
2. Click on the Options button at the top right (you will see a pop up window)
3. Enable the Preview Module Positions and click Save.
4. Check the module map on your website using this code: http://yourwebsiteurl.com/index.php?tp=1
Some of modules may be distorted because the preview feature use different CSS style, but to get an idea of how the modules are positioned, this method is very good.

Enable Drop Down Menu - Joomla 1.6

Most of our template has been designed with drop-down menu. In our demo you will see how the drop-down or fly out menu works, but this feature can't be used in the basic Joomla 1.6 installation. To enable the drop-down menu you will have to do the following modifications on your menu module:
First of all, you have to place a mainmenu module on the module position where the drop down menu is located. On our templates in most of the cases the drop menu is styled for the module position: 'menu'
1. Create a new mainmenu module and place it to 'menu' position. (be sure you publish the module)
2. In the Basic Options tab you have to activate the Show Sub-Menu Items (Click on YES radio button)
This is all! Save your module and refresh your main site to see the changes.

How to Preview Modules - Joomla 1.7

I saw many great Joomla 1.7 templates available for free, but most of them are really complicated to set up. It is not hard to set up a joomla site or install a joomla template, but if you don't know how to position the modules, that is really painful. If the template you want to use, does not come with a module map (module position documentation), you can trick it and find out yourself.

How you find the module positions in Joomla 1.7?

Simple! Login to your Joomla administration panel and follow the steps below:
1. Go the the template manager and find the "Options" button at the top right
2. Click on the "Options" button, and a lightbox will show up with few info.
3. In the "Templates" tab you have to enable the "Preview Module Positions" and click save.
4. Now you are almost finished; add the "?tp=2" to the end of your main domain (will look like this: http://yoursite.com/?tp=2) and start browsing.
5. This way all the module positions will be available for view, but it may be not accurate because some modules can overflow and you will not understand how they are really positioned.
